kudowrite is a personal fiction-writing tool. This policy explains what data the app handles, where it lives, what we share with third parties, and the limited, anonymous analytics we use.
kudowrite does not operate a server of its own and does not collect or store your writing or personal account data. Your content stays either in your browser or in services you have explicitly authorised. The one exception is aggregate, anonymous usage analytics, described in section 5.
All project content (chapters, sections, your story bible, voice settings) is stored in two places you control:
kudowrite/state.json) in your Drive. Only you have access to this file; the app requests the narrow drive.file scope, which limits it to files it creates itself.kudowrite uses Google's OAuth 2.0 / Identity Services (client-side) to sign you in. When you sign in, Google provides your name, email address, and profile picture. These are displayed in the app interface and are not transmitted to or stored by any kudowrite server.
Your use of Google Sign-In and Google Drive is subject to Google's Privacy Policy.
kudowrite's AI features (Rewrite, Expand, Generate) are powered by OpenRouter. kudowrite is a bring-your-own-model tool: you provide your own OpenRouter API key, and you choose which models to run. The key is stored only in your browser's localStorage and is sent directly from your browser to openrouter.ai when you use an AI feature. It is never sent to or stored by kudowrite.
Because your prompts and the model's responses travel directly from your browser to OpenRouter under your own account, kudowrite never sees, stores, sells, or monetises your inputs or outputs. We have no server in this path and no business model that depends on your writing.
kudowrite does not, and cannot — it never receives your text. Whether the model provider may use your prompts and outputs for training is governed entirely by OpenRouter and the specific model you select, not by kudowrite. OpenRouter exposes this directly: in your OpenRouter account settings you can control data logging and training, and each model on OpenRouter is labelled with its provider's data policy (some never train on inputs; some may, depending on the route). Because you hold the key and pick the model, that choice is always yours to make and to change.

kudowrite uses Google Analytics (GA4) to understand aggregate, anonymous usage — such as how many people visit, which pages they view, and roughly where they come from — so the app can be improved. Google Analytics sets cookies and processes limited technical data (such as a truncated IP address) on Google's servers. It does not have access to your writing, your OpenRouter key, or your Google Drive content. Your use of Google Analytics is subject to Google's Privacy Policy, and you can opt out site-wide with the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on.
kudowrite is not intended for users under the age of 18 and contains content suitable for adults only. If you are under 18, please do not use this application.
If this policy changes materially, the "Last updated" date above will be updated. Continued use of the app after any change constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
